  • Congress Gives Trump BRUTAL Ultimatum Over Wiretapping Claims; Get Out Your Popcorn

With Donald Trump spouting off, in the wee hours of the morning, allegations that former President Obama had Trump Tower wiretapped and begging for an investigation, it looks as though Congress is calling his bluff.

Trump, seemingly not realizing his words have very real life consequences, tweeted out:

And while an Obama spokesperson was very quick to point out that this didn’t at all happen, saying:

“A cardinal rule of the Obama administration was that no White House official ever interfered with any independent investigation led by the Department of Justice. As part of that practice, neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any U.S. citizen. Any suggestion otherwise is simply false.”

Congress is giving Trump an ultimatum.

Since Trump offered these allegations with no evidence, top lawmakers in both the House and Senate are asking for proof by the end of the day on Monday.

Members of the House Intelligence Committee have asked “the Justice Department to turn over by Monday any evidence showing Trump Tower was wiretapped during the 2016 presidential race.”

    According to NBC:

“The request came in a letter sent last week to the acting deputy attorney general by the committee chairman, Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), and its ranking Democrat, Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), congressional aides told NBC News. FBI chief James Comey, who reportedly asked the Justice Department to publicly reject Trump’s claim, was also sent a copy of the letter.”

    In addition:

“Nunes has promised his panel would look into potential surveillance of political parties as part of its broader investigation of Russian meddling in the election.”

Which means Trump may have outed himself for being under investigation. Oops.

While Appearing on State of the Union on CNN, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) said:

“The president has one of two choices, either retract or provide the information that the American people deserve. I have no reason to believe that the charge is true, but I also believe that the president of the United States could clear this up in a minute.”

    That’s an absolutely reasonable request.

Trump, at this point, basically has two options — come out and say the allegations are false, or prove them to be true — either way, the truth is about to be revealed. If Trump can’t prove the allegations, then he’s proving he’s a liar. If Trump actually was tapped, that means he’s under investigation. So, basically, at this point, Trump’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t.

Trump’s best course of action would have been not to tweet about any of this in the first place. However, Trump, eager to pivot, place blame on others, deflect, and create his own narrative, may have just bit off more than he can chew.

Needless to say, get out your popcorn, it’s about to get really interesting.
